President's Message

Welcome to Kern Reading Association's website!

I would like to invite you to consider the Kern Reading Association as your source of professional development. School budgets are straining beyond belief. It is unlikely that staff development will be a priority. We are here to share our experience, resources, and educational events with all of you. Check out the calendar to choose the events that best meet your needs.

In October, we host the Kern Reading Association Professional Development Institute. In just one morning at a local school, you can hear a keynote speaker and attend sessions in technology, literature, community resources, or educational strategies. There will be something for everyone, Kindergarten to high school. The Young Authors’ Fair session is mandatory for schools that would like to host an author.

The Young Authors’ Fair events that begin at the PDI, continue with the Prelude in January and book distribution in April. The students may begin writing books for the Young Authors’ Fair throughout the year. We welcome all schools to display student-authored books even if they are not hosting an author. Student writing is the real focus of the Young Authors’ Fair! The highlight is the Young Authors’ Fair week with author visits, the YAF dinner and the Young Authors’ Fair on Saturday, May 19, 2012. It’s a fantastic way to show off the student books and see several authors in one place. Don’t miss it!

Other key events are the Book Talk Tea and the Battle of the Books. Look for more information on these events to be added to the calendar.

     Have a great school year!

     Linda Stacey, KRA President
