KERN COUNTY BATTLE OF THE BOOKS 2023-2024
A bit of history:
Battle of the Books was started 30-plus years ago by Erna Wentland at Belridge School. In 2002, Katie Feldstein and Sue Mustoe took over administration of the Kern County Battle of the Books. The program grew to include students throughout the County and due to the immense popularity of the program, the County was divided into two sections for 2 days of competition. In 2012 Sarah McDonald joined Katie to be the coordinator of the South region with Katie as coordinator of the North region. With the continued interest and growing enthusiasm for the program, a third day of competition was added in 2016, with Jan Lanse joining in as coordinator of the Central region .
At the close of the 2023 Battle of the Books competition, Katie, Jan and Sarah announced they are retiring from their responsibilities as the regional coordinators. THANK YOU Ladies for your years of dedicated volunteerism to make the Battle of the Books the premier event that it is today! So many readers, so many books, so many medals, and so many wonderful memories! THANK YOU!!
The Present:
For the upcoming 2024 Battle of the Books, the tradition will continue with new coordinators. These ladies have been involved with Battle of the Books for a long time as school advisor participants. It is time to pass the torch to our new coordinators: Melissa Pilshaw, Lisa Moore and Rebekah Stambook.
We are excited about their enthusiasm and passion to continue this very special event!
Kern Reading Association and the Kern County Superintendent of Schools are partners in supporting the Kern County Battle of the Books competition!
The Battle will be held on three dates for Grades 4-6 (@ the Kern County Museum/Pioneer Village); one date for Grades 6-8 (Middle School/Jr. High) @ St. Francis School; and one date for 3rd grade (@ the Kern County Museum/Pioneer Village).
